Witness

…please no

not this -

it’s unnecessary -

a summer night

the street smokes

night clubs heave

cabs disgorge

soho rickshaws chance and weave-

it can’t  happen

no please

not this

tell me it didn’t happen -

the bouncers

throwing trouble out-

two young men feuding-

the street brawl

the anger ricochets around the square

the rage returning

down the street

the knife

the fall

the blood

the pavement took it all

you’re dead at twenty four -

the night club owner

cradles you-

his face in disavowal -

no please

it didn’t happen-

not anywhere-

not underneath my window-

no - I didn’t hear  it -

that primeval howl
